September went out swinging.
I spent the last two days buried inside Threshing Day, finished it, and immediately made more than forty theory notes like a completely deranged person who is living on too much coffee. ACOTAR 6 is less than a month away. Veronica Roth is bringing us back to Divergent next week (I’ve pre-ordered!). Heartless Hunter is also being pushed toward television.
So yes. September was a lot. So let’s get into it.
September 2026 Book News: The Short Version
- Rebecca Yarros released Threshing Day on September 29, with thirteen stories showing familiar Empyrean characters on the day their dragons chose them. I have now read it, and there is far more Book 4 setup hiding in this thing than I expected.
- Sarah J. Maas is officially in final-countdown territory. A Court of Splintered Harmony releases October 27, with A Court of Forgotten Melody following January 12, 2027.
- Veronica Roth’s The Sixth Faction releases October 6 and takes us back into Divergent through an alternate version of Tris’s story.
- Kristen Ciccarelli’s Crimson Moth books are being developed for television, and the completed duology is also getting two more books.
- September releases included Rachel Gillig’s The Knave and the Moon (I’m still reading!), Jasmine Mas’s The Emperor’s Enemy, and Stephanie Garber’s The Mirror of Infinite Endings.
- The internet is properly arguing over the chilli-pepper spice scale, because assigning sex scenes vegetables is a great idea! And totally universal.
Right. Dragons first.
Threshing Day Is Here and I Have Questions. More Than 40 of Them.

I said before Threshing Day came out that Rebecca Yarros was going to sprinkle clues through these thirteen bonding stories.
She did.
Oh, she did.
If you still do not know what the book actually is, start with my spoiler-free Threshing Day guide. It explains the book, editions, where it sits in the Empyrean series and, most importantly, why this is not Fourth Wing Book 4.
Once you have finished it, come sit beside me at the corkboard, and bring tea and a notebook.
My new Threshing Day theory guide pulls together every clue I caught from dragon lies, bloodlines, second signets, Zihnal, Liam, Bodhi, Aaric, the black bead, and every moment that made me stop and go, wait, WHAT?
And then there is Liam. Could he really be alive in a different sense? This is why I cannot have nice things.
The larger pattern is that the humans understand far less about dragon bonding than they think they do and Gods, dragons, and family lines are tied together in a way we are probably about to find out more about in January.
Does Threshing Day change anything about Fourth Wing Book 4?
For me? Absolutely.
We still do not have a release date or public title for Book 4. butYarros has confirmed she is writing it, and the five-book plan still stands. I am keeping the confirmed information on my Fourth Wing Book 4 tracker and the more nutty speculation in Everything We Know and Everything We Dread.
But Threshing Day gave us evidence for shenanigans and foolery afoot.
Rebecca. Ma’am.
Explain yourself.
ACOTAR Has Entered the Chat

Remember when October felt ages away and we all made a plan to read the whole series so we can be ready for the new book? Yeah. Me to. How did that go for you guys because A Court of Splintered Harmony comes out October 27. It is 352 pages which officially kick off The Valkyrie Cycle, and the publisher synopsis has Koschei stirring, old alliances splintering and the Night Court dealing with betrayals and revealed truths. Phew.
Bloomsbury is following it with A Court of Forgotten Melody on January 12, 2027, which means Maas is giving us two ACOTAR releases less than three months apart after making everyone wait more than five years. Crazy town.
I have the title, covers, structure, reading prep and confirmed information in my A Court of Splintered Harmony guide.
And yes, the wider Maasverse still matters. The Crescent City connection is a thing to watch out for, and I have the current crossover mess laid out in my Crescent City 4 guide.
At some point I am going to need a wall chart again. Maybe some string. I mean I already have some left over from Threshing Day.
Veronica Roth The Sixth Faction is Coming

The Sixth Faction comes out October 6. Like, as of writing this, next week.
This one feels personal for me in a way Dragons and Fairies aren’t. I read Divergent during a very hard part of my life, when books were one of the few things I still spent money on and I was raising an autistic 2 year old in a small little house, with a whisper of a writing career, and a deep love of addicting stories. The series mattered to me a lot. I still remember crying at the ending.
So when Roth decided to go back and ask, essentially, what if the Choosing Ceremony went differently? Squee. I am here for it.
I wrote far more about why this return gets me in my full Sixth Faction breakdown.
In essence: The original path forks off at the Choosing Ceremony then a tragedy changes Beatrice’s decision, and she becomes involved in an underground rebellion and, naturally, meets a mysterious boy with a number for a name. The US edition is 528 pages and begins a two-book story! Both are ready for pre-order.
It is basically the author writing an AU of her own book. Fanfiction logic has won. I love this for us.
Roth also gets to revisit a world she created as a very young writer with fifteen more years of experience behind her. We’re going to see a big tone shift, unless the editors worked with her to keep that semi-similar. I peeked at the opening pages and they look unchanged as far as a brief read could tell me. I feel a little cheated by that, not gonna lie. The preview shows you just enough to see it’s the exact same and not a word more. Roth’s a meany.
Heartless Hunter Might Be Coming to TV

Hollywood is snooping.
The Crimson Moth series, beginning with Heartless Hunter, is being developed for television. Georgia Lee, Joe Henderson and Chad Kennedy acquired the rights, and Kim Shumway has written a pilot that is being shown to potential buyers. There is no platform, cast or release date yet, so nobody start fancasting aggressively enough to frighten the actors. I mean it! I’m watching you. Put Google your browser down.
The other surprise was the books themselves. Heartless Hunter and Rebel Witch were sold to us as a duology. But two more novels have now been acquired. Dark Descent, Book 3, is currently planned for August 2027, with a fourth book to follow.
I am slightly torn because I love seeing a series readers adore get more, more more. I also like ending done well.
But if Ciccarelli found a real reason to reopen that world, I will read it.
Of course I will. I have no self-control.
What Books Came Out in September?
September had some very decent releases outside the giant fandom machines as well.

The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig
Released September 1.
Rachel Gillig returned to the world of The Knight and the Moth with The Knave and the Moon, the second Stonewater Kingdom book. And it’s messy.
Do start with The Knight and the Moth first. I’m on the last couple of chapter myself so I can jump into Knave!
The Emperor’s Enemy by Jasmine Mas
Released September 15.
Jasmine Mas started the Unsurvivable Love duet with The Emperor’s Enemy, which gives us someone called Zora Ravenal, a Knight Mage fighting an empire, and another character called Aleksander, who is the emperor who is very determined to capture Zora.
The marketing calls it true enemies-to-lovers dark romantasy, which immediately makes me more interested because either this is right up my alley, or it’s another book pretending it knows what enemies to lovers even means.
The Mirror of Infinite Endings by Stephanie Garber
Released September 22.
Jacks and Evangeline are back. Wait here while I FREAK OUT. I LOVE this series.
The Mirror of Infinite Endings is a 256-page return to the Once Upon a Broken Heart world, and its publisher copy assures us that everything is wonderful and perfect and nobody is keeping any secrets capable of changing reality. Obviously. Seems totally legit.
Stephanie Garber has never hurt us before.
I’m a little cross because there are some beautiful copies of this series and this book doesn’t match. Sigh. Hopefully that will change.
The Internet Discourse This Month: What the Hell Does πΆπΆπΆ Actually Mean?
The Cut published a piece at the end of September about the romance-book chilli-pepper scale and the fact that, shockingly, nobody agrees what arbitrary peppers as numbers mean. Color me surprised.
This is a big reason why all of my round ups include tropes, and synopsis, and I try to include actually scene briefs so you get the tone. Peppers are great but there needs to be better round ups that make sense for everyone.
Spice ratings are good shorthand though. I’m not sure why we’re arguing about vegetables having meanings when everyone with half a brain cell knows…they’re peppers….
Should there be a universal guide and if so who gets to make it? The publishers? Geez could you imagine?
For the Writers in the Room
September actually became a brilliant month for studying reader promise! Most of the books releasing are from fandoms who know the stories inside out and have opinions. If you want to study how readers absorb books, what they feel about ratings and genres, and how marketing can get you in hot water, you only have to hop to Reddit or TikTok and look at the latest releases.
Readers are fantastically forgiving when you give them the thing they knowingly signed up for is the takeaway.
Also, the worldbuilding tool was released this month alongside my query series which comes equipped with a query building tool.
September 2026 Book News FAQ
Rebecca Yarros’s Threshing Day was one of September’s biggest fantasy-franchise releases. It published September 29 and contains thirteen Empyrean bonding stories, including Xaden’s. It is a companion collection rather than the fourth main Empyrean novel.
Yes. Some are direct new pieces of information and some are theory material rather than confirmed future plot. The strongest areas include dragon records, legacy bonds, family history, signet mechanics, the marked ones and several relationships that look different after seeing the characters during Threshing. I have them organised in the full spoiler-controlled theory guide.
A Court of Splintered Harmony releases October 27, 2026. It is followed by A Court of Forgotten Melody on January 12, 2027.
Veronica Roth’s The Sixth Faction releases October 6, 2026. It begins a new version of the Divergent story after a tragedy changes Beatrice Prior’s Choosing Ceremony.
The Crimson Moth books are currently being developed for television. A pilot has been written and is being presented to potential buyers, but there is no confirmed platform, cast or release date yet.
September releases included The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig on September 1, The Emperor’s Enemy by Jasmine Mas on September 15, The Mirror of Infinite Endings by Stephanie Garber on September 22 and Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros on September 29.
